| The Wire Barnsley B lost the toss and was put into bat by Upper Haugh. The opening pair of Tom Clifford and George Tyas, managed to see off what is arguably, the best opening bowling pair in the league. Both batsmen showed a good attitude and played some excellent shots in a partnership that was only marred by another unnecessary run out.
The following pair, Harry Fox and Lewis Totty, defended their wickets confidently. Both players did exactly what was asked of them, playing with straight bats and picking up the occasional run to remain undefeated on the completion of their innings. The dynamic duo, Jak Rennison and Alex Gough batted exceptionally well to pick up quick singles and the odd boundary. They remained alert for 99% of the time, the only ‘blot on the landscape' again being a silly run out. We have to concentrate 100% all of the time boys. The final couple, Daniel Cutler and Spencer Lavender, took the Barnsley total to 37. Spencer batted aggressively, knocking several fours and Daniel supported him to perfection. The running between the wickets was excellent and this pair gave Barnsley a fighting chance. Total 37 Barnsley took to the daunting task of defending a small total with gusto and, I must say, amazing confidence. Spencer opened the bowling and in his first overs had Upper Haugh in disarray, taking wickets and pinning them down. George Tyas also bowled extremely well and was most unlucky not to get a wicket. Tom Clifford, Alex Gough, Lewis Totty, Harry Fox and Daniel Cutler all played their part. Harry, Daniel and Lewis showed a pace and accuracy I did not know they were capable of. Also, big pat on the back must go to Jak Rennison who was thrown in at the deep end to keep wicket. He did a fantastic job all round, and took an incredible diving catch off the bowling of Lewis. The final couple of overs left Upper Haugh needing only 12 runs to win. This game was going to go down to the wire. It was left to Spencer and Lewis to finish the job. Both bowled tremendously, with Spencer picking up his 6th wicket. He had, at one point earlier, been on a hat trick, and had also taken a superb caught and bowled. Upper Haugh again took it to the last couple of balls, but some excellent fielding by Harry Fox, (nice stop son) and Spencer's bowling, gave Barnsley a most rewarding victory.
This was a well deserved triumph in a very close game, played by two extremely skilful teams. I doubt that there will be a closer match this season, or a better personal performance in any under 11 league in Yorkshire, than the one achieved by Spencer Lavender. A very special ‘Man of The Match Performance'. |
