Barnsley Captain for the day, Lewis Totty lost the toss and the Grimethorpe Captain, Jack Whale inserted Barnsley to bat on a pleasantly warm and sunny Friday evening.

Jacob Heseltine and Chris Robinson were the opening pair and after a quiet first over progressed safely and soundly to a total of 26 - 0 at the end of the first 4 overs, Robinson (6 not out) as solid as a rock and Heseltine top scoring with 17 being particularly severe on Adam Guest's bowling, plundering two powerful bounderies, surely leaving the visitors contemplating the wisdom of inviting the Shaw Laners to bat first.

The sensible approach to batting was continued by second pair James Cole and Lewis Parry, Cole (11 not out) the more dominant and aggressive of the pair, but again, secure and dependable support from his technically correct colleague Parry allowed Cole to attack without fear.

Callum Bowler and Ty'an King certainly kept up the momentum, (if not quite the impressive discipline of the first two pairs) and Ty'an was unlucky to find himself helpless to avoid being run out after a crazy call from his excitable colleague Callum, (who was obviously keen to steal the strike based on the confidence built up during an flamboyantly positive knock), including two well hit fours. Callum Bowler finished with an impressive 16 not out, whilst Ty'an did not allow his unfortunate dismissal compromise his innings.

Oliver Roscoe was also very unfortunate to find himself run out, feeling hard done to, and obviously believing that his bat grounded all along, this odd dismissal followed a bazaar sequence of events, which led from a similar but unsuccessful earlier attempt by over zealous Grimethorpe fielders to claim him run out.

Never the less, Oliver was impressive in his attitude, stoically putting the episode down to experience and hitting some of his strongest shots after the loss of his wicket. Meanwhile Lewis Totty grew in stature and confidence throughout his knock and the final pair did Barnsley proud - Roscoe finishing with 7 runs (one run short) and Totty with 8 not out. Barnsley finished with an impressive 92 for 2 (boosted by 34 extras), all the boys should be proud of their disciplined approach and all should consider that it really could have been possible to complete the innings without losing any wickets, which would have meant a three figure total.

The Barnsley camp were in high spirits as they took the field to bowl but did not let that allow any complacency or ill discipline to creep in to the serois business of defending their impressive total. Totty caught the eye with a quick and accurate spell, spoiled only by his repeated inability to complete a maiden, his second over being superb for the first five balls, each getting faster and faster, to the extent that Heseltine (filling in as wicket keeper) had to retreat two extra paces behind the stumps as the over progressed, but then Lewis let himself down with a limp wide on the last ball.

Without doubt if Lewis Totty continues to improve at the rate already seen this season, just by adding the necessary consistency to his game, he will undoubtedly have a rewarding season with the ball. James Cole assisted Totty admirably with an aggressive display let down only by the occasionally short pitched ball, which again can be worked on in training.

This trend ran through the bowling dispays of the next two bowlers, Chris Robinson bowled with genuine accuracy and guile and was unlucky not to have two stumpings (very narrow decisions giving the doubt to the batsman on both occasions) resulting from smart glove work by Heseltine, after the batsman had been comprehensively beaten by Robinson's flight and swing. Frustratingly however, Chris offered a wide and a no ball respectively in his two overs which spoilt what should have been two maidens, if not 2 wicket maidens.

It is always encouraging to see a young man dig in and concentrate to deliver results and pleasingly this is exactly what Callum Bowler did, after a wayward first over including three wides, and irritatingly enough three very good deliveries, Callum knuckled down to bowl a fine maiden to complete his spell. Both these cricketers should reflect on their bowling and make the necessary improvements before the next competitive match, because both clearly have the potential to perform well with the ball and we all look forward to maidens AND wickets in the future.

The game was rapped up in Barnsley's favour with a fine display of fast bowling by Totty and Heseltine, both bowling with speed, accuracy and aggression to "shut the door" on the brave Grimethorpe opposition, who finished well short of the target with 59 runs but having lost NO WICKETS.

The game was played with a great spirit, whilst at times being tough competitive and intense. The intensity was exemplified with a defiant knock by Grimethorpe Captain Jack Whale against a strong and aggressive pace attack of Totty and Heseltine off whom he scored two impressive fours, but only narrowly avoiding dismissal on three occasions as the Barnsley boys completed a well deserved victory.

M - o - M - Barnsley - Chris Robinson. This award was given to Chris for batting sensibly and supporting his colleague by calling and running well. Chris never looked like losing his wicket, showing skill and determination to get the batting off to a solid start. Chris bowled well and deserved to get wickets, his bowling only let down by momentary lapses in concentration, I believe he could have finished with a couple of wickets and two maidens.
